     Fit Planet Pledge of Sustainability

The New York City Triathlon is pleased to welcome Bloomberg Business Week as our 2012 Sustainability Sponsor. We encourage all our triathletes and their families and friends to help us be as eco-friendly as possible.

Here are just a few of the green things we are doing this year:

·         Race Day Recycling

In 2011, we had great success and an awesome green team to help with our recycling effort at the JetBlue Finish Festival. This year, look for trash and recycling bins placed next to each other so you can do your part! We’ll also have collection bins for various items to donate at swim start and swim exit.  We are aiming for less than 1 pound of landfill waste per athlete this year. Thanks for helping us be a friend to New York City!

·         Green Portable Toilets

All the portable toilets at this year's NYC Triathlon will be certified green so when you need to go, you can rest assured that you're not harming the environment. Instead of harsh toxic chemicals, we are using eco-friendly biodegradables that are gentle on the environment.

·         Organic T-Shirts

For the second year running, our race and volunteer t-shirts are made from organic cotton. All shirts are printed with non-toxic, water-based dyes, and non-toxic chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Fashion, function, and earth-friendly—what a combination!

·         Join the Green Team

If you aren't racing in this year’s  NYC Triathlon but want to be a part of the event, sign up for our Green Team. Simply click here and register to volunteer. Make sure to rank the Green Team at the top of your preference list. We’re also looking for Corporate Green Team partners who want to volunteer as a corporate group. If you’re interested, email Brad for details.

·         Donate your Shoes!

We encourage all of our athletes this year to wear a pair of shoes to the swim start that they’d like to donate to Soles for Souls!  Just show up on race morning in a pair of kicks you don’t want to keep, drop them in the bins at athlete baggage drop off, and we’ll do the rest.  You’ll make someone’s feet very happy!

       ·         Swim Cap and Goggle Recycling

You’re done with the swim and heading over to transition to get your bike and break out.  Before you burn rubber on the West Side Highway, make a mental note to recycle your swim cap!  Bins will be located at both transitions.

      ·         Recyclable Bags for your NYC Tri Merch

Stop by the merchandise booth at the Expo to pick up fun NYC Tri gear.  You’ll walk away with cool clothes and a recyclable bag to carry it all in.  Every small step helps!

·         Share a Ride to the Race

If you want to reduce your carbon footprint then take the subway or ride share to the NYC Triathlon. We are providing a convenient and free (the best part) way to connect with your fellow triathletes through a partnership with PickupPal. Ride sharing is way more fun than driving solo, and it's good for the planet.  And when you create a PickupPal account, we can track the number of miles and calculate the carbon emissions that the race has saved. Check it out by visiting the NYC Tri PickupPal page.
