NYC Tri Goes Green
As triathletes we rely on clean air, clean water, and clean land to train and stay fit. Unfortunately, there are environmental consequences of racing: we need to travel (greenhouse gases) and we need to eat and drink (trash). When 3,500 of your closest competitors get together those consequences add up. In our effort to retain the title of the Greatest Triathlon in the World, the Nautica New York City Triathlon is partnering with Athletes for a Fit Planet to ensure that the Nautica New York City Triathlon is gentle on the environment.
How we're going green:
· Race Day Recycling
Between paper cups on the run and plastic disposable bottles at the finish, the Nautica New York City Triathlon produces a lot of trash. This year we’ll be diverting a whole lot of that trash from landfill by recycling and composting as much waste as possible. We’re aiming for less than 1 lb of landfill waste per athlete and we need your cooperation!
· Green Toilets
At this year's Nautica NYC Triathlon, portable toilets will be certified green so when you need to go, you can rest assured that you're not harming the environment. Instead of harsh toxic chemicals, our port-o-johns will use eco-friendly biodegradables that are gentle on the environment.
· Organic t-shirts from Nautica
In 2009 all our race and volunteer t-shirts will be made from organic cotton. All shirts are printed with non-toxic water base dyes and no toxic chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Fashion, function, and earth-friendly--what a combination!
What you can do
· Join the Green team
If you aren't racing in this year’s Nautica NYC Triathlon but want to be a part of the event, sign up for our Green Team. Simply click here and register to volunteer. Make sure to rank the Green Team at the top of your preference list. We’re also looking for Corporate Green Team partners who want to volunteer as a corporate group. If you’re interested, email Brad for details.
· Rideshare program with PickupPal
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint then ride share to the Nautica NYC Triathlon - we are providing a convenient free (the best part) way to connect with your fellow triathletes through a partnership with PickupPal. Ride sharing is way more fun than driving solo and its good for the planet. And when you create a PickupPal account, we can keep track the number of miles and calculate the carbon emissions that the race has saved. Check it out for yourself by visiting the NYC Tri PickupPal page.
· Recycle at the NYC Tri
After you’ve crossed the finish line and you’re celebrating your big day at the JetBlue Finish Festival, make sure to keep an eye out for our recycling stations situated next to traditional trash cans. When you finish that bottle of water or Cytomax, make sure to drop it in the right bin. We thank you and Mother Earth thanks you!
