JULY 8, 2012
Registration: Registration opens November 1, 2011 and closes May1, 2012. To register, please email Allie at Allie@korffenterprises.com.
PC Friendly Course: The Aquaphor New York City Triathlon is one of the world's most PC friendly courses. The Hudson River swim is fast since you swim with the current. The West Side Highway bike is a paved one loop course. The run is across 72nd St. with a loop of paved Central Park.
Classification: We encourage ALL physically challenged athletes to race New York regardless of skill or experience. The Accenture Challenged Athletes National Championship is not an official USAT or ITU event, and will not offer classification. NOTE: Participation in the Accenture Challenged Athletes National Championship will not qualify participants for the Paratriathlon National Championship, ITU Paratriathlon Worlds or for the U.S. Paratriathlon team.
Participants may gain entrance to the Accenture Challenged Athletes National Championship if:
• They have been previously classified in one of these six categories.
• They have a physical disability (i.e., an amputation, spinal cord injury, etc.) that meets the ITU standards for disability. If not already classified, athletes will be required to submit a form signed by a doctor to verify their disability. Contact travis@challengedathletes.org to receive a form or request more information. Completed forms are due on April 1, 2012. Please scan and email completed forms to travis@challengedathletes.org, fax to 858 866 0958 or mail to Challenged Athletes Foundation, c/o Travis Ricks, 9591 Waples Street, San Diego, CA 92121
Prize Money: For the first time in North America, prize money will be offered at a Paratriathlon championship! The Accenture Challenged Athletes National Championship will crown five top male and female paratriathletes, using a format that will allow all six Paratriathlon classes to compete against each other.
A prize purse will be equally split among the top three male and female podium finishers as follows:
- 1st = $1,000
- 2nd = $750
- 3rd = $500
- Fourth and fifth place finishers (male and female) will receive a plaque.
How the Top Five Will Be Determined: The winners will be determined using a “Power Points” format – all six classes in each gender will compete against a par time for their category. The winner, second place and third place overall finishers for male and female paratriathletes will be determined by who comes closest to (or exceeds by the most) the par time for their category. Each finisher’s time will be divided by the par time to determine their Power Points. The Power Points will then be used to rank all finishers competing for the prize money to determine the victors.
For example:
Athlete A, a TRI-1, finishes with a time of 2:21:07 vs. the TRI-1 par time of 2:22:54 = 101.26 Power Points
Athlete B, a TRI-6, finishes with a time of 2:05:34 vs. the TRI-6 par time of 2:02:15 = 97.34 Power Points
Athlete A is the winner even though his time is substantially slower than Athlete B’s.
Target Times Males Par Time Females Par Time TRI 1 2:22:54 TRI 1 3:11:47 TRI 2 2:54:20 TRI 2 3:03:06 TRI 3 2:35:34 TRI 3 3:10:31 TRI 4 2:16:02 TRI 4 2:39:19 TRI 5 2:13:17 TRI 5 2:37:57 TRI 6 2:02:15 TRI 6 2:41:47
Note: For the purpose of the following information: Guides are people who race with visually impaired athletes (T6). Handlers are volunteers who assist all other Paratriathletes with their various needs.
Physically Challenged (PC) Handlers: The Aquaphor NYC Triathlon has arranged for every Paratriathlete needing a handler to have a handler during the Race so long as you notify Justin Model or race management no later than May 15th. Alternatively, if you are coming with your own handler, please send Justin Model your handler’s name, cell and email address. Credentials will be issued to only those people on Justin’s list. IMPORTANT: You may not just show up with a handler and expect him or her to be credentialed. All Handlers must attend a mandatory orientation meeting and then must attend the Paratriathlon briefing immediately following. The session provides an opportunity for our volunteers to ask questions, and become familiar with the race course.
Visually Impaired Athlete Guides: Visually impaired athletes are responsible for securing their own guides and must have their information prior to registration.
Paratriathlon Briefing: All Paratriathlon competitors and all blind guides and all handlers must attend a mandatory race and safety briefing. You will not be able to race without attending this briefing, as it provides all of the information you need. After the briefing, you will receive your race packets – numbers, swim caps, bike numbers, goodie bags, etc. Chips are distributed on Sunday. You (and your guide if you are a visually impaired athlete) will also need to sign a swim waiver as well as a USAT waiver and submit them at the session. Packets will not be distributed before this session. IMPORTANT: All handlers and guides must attend this briefing.
Briefing Note to All Competitors: No one will be allowed into the mandatory briefing late. If you arrive after the doors are closed, you will be counted as absent and removed from the start list. Moral of the story: Don’t miss the bus!
