NYC Tri Goes Green
The Nautica New York City Triathlon is pleased to welcome Stonyfield Organic as our 2010 Sustainability Sponsor. Working in partnership with Athletes for a Fit Planet, Stonyfield is greening the race. We encourage all our triathletes and their families and friends to help us be as eco-friendly as possible. Here are just a few of the green things we are doing this year:
· Race Day Recycling
In 2009 we had great success with our recycling effort at the Jet Blue Finish Festival. This year, we are expanding our efforts to include T1/T2. Look for the trash and recycling bins that will be placed next to each other. We’ll also have collection bins for swim caps and used bicycle tubes at the exits to the transition area. We’re aiming for less than 1 pound of landfill waste per athlete this year so please help us recycle.
· Green Portable Toilets
All the portable toilets at this year's Nautica NYC Triathlon will be certified green so when you need to go, you can rest assured that you're not harming the environment. Instead of harsh toxic chemicals, we are using eco-friendly biodegradables that are gentle on the environment.
· Organic t-shirts from Nautica
For the second year running, our race and volunteer t-shirts are made from organic cotton. And all shirts are printed with non-toxic water-based dyes, and non-toxic chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Fashion, function, and earth-friendly-- what a combination!
· Upcycling Stonyfield containers
Complementing our recycling efforts, we’ll be collecting all empty Stonyfield yogurt containers in separate bins and shipping them off to our friends at TerraCycle, where they will recycle the plastic to make cool new products.
· Join the Green team
If you aren't racing in this year’s Nautica NYC Triathlon but want to be a part of the event, sign up for our Green Team. Simply click here and register to volunteer. Make sure to rank the Green Team at the top of your preference list. We’re also looking for Corporate Green Team partners who want to volunteer as a corporate group. If you’re interested, email Brad for details.
· Share a Ride to the Race
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint then take the subway or ride share to the Nautica NYC Triathlon. We are providing a convenient and free (the best part) way to connect with your fellow triathletes through a partnership with PickupPal. Ride sharing is way more fun than driving solo and its good for the planet. And when you create a PickupPal account, we can keep track the number of miles and calculate the carbon emissions that the race has saved. Check it out by visiting the NYC Tri PickupPal page.
· Recycle Your Old gear at the Expo
Our green partner Athletes for a Fit Planet will be collecting your old race t-shirts, wetsuits, swim caps and bicycle tubes for recycling at their booth at the Sports and Fitness Expo. FitPlanet will be sending all your old, worn-out stuff to BolderPath to give it a second life as bags, backpacks, and other useful products. Why throw it away when you can recycle it?
