JANUS FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE CHALLENGE
COACHING TIP #8:
Racing
Thoughts - Dial in a few key ideas with the race season here
After a few months of
focused carefully laid out training, the idea of entering an event
presents the challenge of bridging what has happened in day to day
training, over to the start line.
§
There are a few approaches to racing - setting a PR, beating
a competitor, or simply finishing an event. To be honest, in most cases the
approach is the same.
§
What your training has no doubt taught is that even pacing
is the most effective on all levels - physiologically and mentally.
§
In order to achieve this, to trick is to be able to bring
what has happened in all your training to the race course, and this takes
a lot of discipline and good judgment.
§
There are always exceptions, in most cases environmental
conditions. Be aware in varying
training conditions (cold, wind) how things change. Colder temperatures may elevate heart
rates faster, requiring a more controlled build up to full race speed.
The scenarios are endless and generally contribute to the 'story' of each
individual event experience.
§
Give these scenarios some thought, and always relate them
back to similar conditions from training.
At least with some forethought to strategy, the advantage is in
your court as opposed to simply focusing on what the desired 'goal' end
result should be.
§
As always the place to have a dress rehearsal for this is on
harder workout days, in particular those workouts done in a group
situation. The opportunity to
assess your discipline in more competitive/ pressured situations will
become apparent.
