JANUS FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE CHALLENGE COACHING TIP #4:   SWIM DRILLS

Swimming is the most technical sport when compared to cycling or running. You can a have a huge amount of strength, but if not applied correctly in the water, you may feel like a sinking rock.  The following are the basic principles that must be properly learned in order to master the freestyle (front crawl) stroke:

  1. Body Position - The body position is the most important aspect of swimming. The head, hips and heels of the feet need to be up close to the surface of the water while swimming. This allows you to get streamlined and move through the water like a missile. Kicking drills performed on your front and on your side, without a kick board, will help you perfect the proper body position in the water. You may want to try using a set of fins at first to help you get the feel of your whole body up at the surface of the water.
  2. Lengthening of the body while swimming is the second most import aspect of swimming. Rolling from one side to the other and keeping one arm out in front throughout most of the stroke does this. We all know that a longer surf board, ski or boat is faster than a shorter one. Keeping the body as long as possible at all times in the water will ultimately make you a faster swimmer.

Mastering proper body position and lengthening of the body are the most important aspects of swimming and will help you the most with faster swim times and ease of swimming.

Each part of the freestyle stroke is broken down into a specific drill performed to make it easier to help you learn each basic concept at a time. Drills are the most valuable tools in helping you swim faster and more efficiently. Once each drill is mastered you will then be able to combine all the principles into one smooth stroke.
