JANUS FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE CHALLENGE COACHING TIP #3: WEIGHT
TRAINING
Strength training is the 'fountain of
youth'. In your day to day life,
if you are losing strength, have low energy or are losing muscle mass
weight training can help. A very basic strength routine will enable you
to maintain a lot of activities that contribute to your quality of life. Taken for granted activities like
lifting grocery bags or gardening take a minimal level of good
structural strength. This loss of strength is responsible for the frailty
and diminished vitality we associate with aging, not to mention the loss
of speed we all talk about as the years tick by.
Diminished Bone Loss
In both men and women strength/resistance
training has shown to contribute to increased bone density levels. This
is a very important issue considering the prevalence of osteoporosis and
related fractures. These benefits come without the concern of possible
side effects of medications and supplements.
Basic Foundation
Weight training is important in not only
maintaining basic physical movement and function, but also
in creating a base for incorporating other sports into a training
program. It is advantageous to
incorporate strength training into more aerobic activities, since this
will build up weaker muscles and make these disciplines more efficient.
Metabolic boost
Certainly one of the most popular benefits of
weight training is that it boosts your base metabolic rate. Weight
training promotes the development of lean muscle mass which requires on
average 50 calories per pound more to maintain than stored fat. In addition
the post workout benefit is that your metabolism remains at a high level
for hours after exercising. It is the opportunity to keep your 'fast
twitch' muscle fibers active and trained, and hang onto the ever
vanishing speed of endurance athletes.
Improved Flexibility
Weight training, when done with proper
execution, can improve flexibility. Most exercises require that muscles
and joints move through a fuller range of motion than is necessitated by
different individual sports.
Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation
Weight training strengthens and stabilizes
ligaments, tendons and joint structures making them less prone to injury,
either through overuse or trauma.
So many joint injuries are a result of weak/inflexible supporting
musculature around them.
Performance Enhancement
Done properly strength training has been shown
to enhance performance across a wide variety of sports/activities.
Considering the loss of strength with aging, it is a vital component to
athletes who want to maintain their edge and level of performance.
