Have you ever wondered what wines you should (would) sip during the swim, bike and run? We asked Crushed Wine App founder, Carla McKay, to answer that question for you. Read the interview below for her recommendations!*
*Wine is not allowed on the race course!
1) Tell us about Crushed! How did you come up with this idea?
Crushed was born almost two years ago from feeling underwhelmed by the wine applications available and my seeing a huge opportunity to build a better wine app that tied in with social media. Wine is social – wine is meant to be shared with friends. Crushed powers you to track-search-share wines with your friends.
2) How/when did you start competing in triathlons?
Completed my first triathlon back in my 20’s and have done occasional triathlons over the years. Last year I trained and completed the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in March and I was hooked. I took up triathlon full-time and completed seven tris in 2013 including the NYC Tri last summer! I just tackled my first 70.3 in Oceanside, CA! I love training for three sports – keeps life more balanced and interesting!
3) If you had to “pair” a wine to each leg of the race, what would you go with?
Swim – Bubbly to start to clear the palate and wake up the taste buds – like a brisk open water swim!
Bike – Rose (likely Provence style) – nice medium-weight wine with good fruit and minerality to fuel you on the bike!
Run – Light effervescent white – like a Vinho Verde or a Txckolina – to refresh the body and power you on the run!
Each of these wines would pair well with a Salted Caramel flavored GU – my personal favorite!
4) Any recommendations on vineyards that are also great places to train?
I’m spoiled living and training in Northern California. Both Sonoma and Napa offer excellent running trails and biking routes – and the weather is temperate so you can swim outdoors all year round. My second favorite is the North Fork of Long Island. I love swimming in the Long Island Sound and running and biking on the beautiful roads past the gorgeous vineyards. There is always some good food and wine waiting at the end of the training day!
5) Water or wine in your bike bottle on race day?
Water during the race – but I look forward to that first glass of wine upon completion!
